Culligan employees share what water means to them for #WorldWaterDay

Culligan employees from across the globe have shared what water means to them for World Water Day, which takes place annually on the 22nd March.

Established in 1993 by the United Nations, World Water Day celebrates water and aims to raise awareness of the 2.2 billion people living without access to safe water. It is about taking action to tackle the global water crisis, with a core focus on supporting the achievement of Sustainable Development Goal number 6: water and sanitation for all by 2030.

This year the World Water Day organisers asked the question ‘What does water mean to you?’, designed to spark conversations both in person and online, and get people really thinking about the impact water has on their daily lives. The responses received will inform a report about what water means to people around the world.

For Culligan, water is our passion. Every day we proudly provide access to highly purified, safe drinking water to 50 million people globally. But what about the people who work for us, what impact or meaning does water have for them? Well, we put out a call to action, alongside the incentive of a free reusable water bottle (everyone loves a freebie), to find out and the responses we received back were varied, insightful, and authentic.

For some, water is all about staying hydrated whilst working or exercising, whilst for others, it’s about the beauty of water in nature and the feeling that gives them. Other responses ranged from the joy of splashing in puddles with children to watering home-grown fruit and veg for the family to enjoy.

Seeing the range of responses makes you realise how important water is to our lives in a variety of ways, beyond just the obvious one of needing to drink water to stay hydrated and healthy. We all interact with water in different ways, some a little, some a lot, but for each individual that personal connection, experience, or routine they have with water goes much deeper than we may have thought.

Of course, for many people around the world, just having access to clean water is a daily challenge and that is fundamentally what World Water Day is all about. Today, water is under extreme threat from a growing population, the increasing demands of agriculture and industry, and the worsening impact of climate change. As societies balance the demands on water resources, people’s interests are being considered less and less.

The value of water is much more than its price; it has enormous complex value for our households, culture, health, education, economics, and the integrity of our natural environment. If these get overlooked then we risk mismanaging this finite, irreplaceable source that means many things to many people, and is vital to life in all its forms.
